Get Your Annual Well Woman Exam at Lona Sasser Obstetrics and Gynecology
Why is your annual well woman exam so important?
Under the Affordable Care Act, women in the U.S. receive one free annual well woman exam. This exam is a critical preventive measure to take for your well-being. Even if you feel fine, it’s important to take advantage of this free opportunity to be examined by your gynecologist. This way, you can address health problems from their earliest stages of development, before they start to seriously impact your quality of life. Your annual well woman exam is also the perfect time to talk to your gynecologist about birth control and family planning, uncomfortable or heavy periods, symptoms related to pelvic floor discomfort or weakness, and any other gynecologic topic of concern. While it can be helpful to research these questions on your own, talking to your doctor about them can help you gain greater clarity, as well as a personalized response based on your doctor’s training, experience, and your in-person examination. And, when you’re at your exam, you can get tested for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), or request a pregnancy test.

What to Expect at Your Annual Well Woman Exam
Your exam will comprise of a discussion of your medical history and overall health, routine screenings, and a physical exam. These will likely include measurements of weight and height, a blood pressure check, breast exam, pelvic exam and Pap smear. Pap smears are generally recommended every 3 years for women ages 21 to 65. If you wish to be tested for STIs or pregnancy at the time of your exam, bring this up with your provider.
Come prepared in order to get the most out of your exam. Bring a list of medical events, vaccinations or surgeries since your last exam; any medications you are taking and their dosage; and any concerns or questions you want to discuss with your doctor.
Taking advantage of this free, important exam is one of the best ways to build a positive, trusting, lifelong relationship with your gynecologist. Ready to make an appointment for your annual well woman exam? Call our office at 954-340-1050, or book online.
