What is urogynecology?

Urogynecology is a specialized field of gynecology for female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery.  Urogynecologists serve women who are experiencing urinary, reproductive, or gastrointestinal health problems. For example, they see patients with symptoms related to urinary incontinence, prolapse, and pelvic floor disorders.

Typically, urogynecology doctors are highly trained. They must complete medical school, a four-year obstetrics and gynecology residency, and additional training in urogynecology. So you can be sure you are in qualified hands.

Some patients prefer to take reproductive health issues to a female provider. Perhaps it makes them feel more comfortable working with a practitioner who shares their biology or perhaps there are other factors that influence their preference. Whatever the reason, seeking a female urogynecologist for your care is the right choice if it will put you at ease or make you feel more confident about seeking care.

Why seek care?

Patients may seek a female urogynecologist in order to address several areas of concern.

Urinary Incontinence and Bladder Problems

Urinary incontinence is involuntary leakage of urine. Up to one third of people in the US experience urinary incontinence, which is more common in women than in men. It can be caused by weakened pelvic floor muscles. Pregnancy, obesity, and smoking can all increase one’s risk of experiencing urinary incontinence.

There are different types of urinary incontinence, and you might experience either or both.

Stress incontinence is the leaking of pee when you are coughing, laughing or even sneezing. Leaks can also happen when you are exercising or performing strenuous activities.

Urgency urinary incontinence is that sudden urgent need to go. It can have you losing bladder control on your way to the bathroom, and once you get the urge it’s hard to stop.

Mixed incontinence combined symptoms of both.

Bladder problems can be caused by a range of conditions, including urinary tract or vaginal infections, muscle weakness, imbalanced hormones or neurological disorders. Work with your female urogynecologist to diagnose and treat your symptoms.

Postpartum Incontinence

It’s estimated that about half of women experience urinary leakage after giving birth, and it’s most common among parents who delivered their baby vaginally. But your urogynecologist can work with you to develop strategies to help you get back control.

Pelvic Organ Prolapse

Less common than urinary or fecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse nevertheless impacts 3% of women in the US.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, “pelvic organ prolapse happens when the muscles and tissues supporting the pelvic organs (the uterus, bladder, or rectum) become weak or loose. This allows one or more of the pelvic organs to drop or press into or out of the vagina.”

Risk of prolapse increases with vaginal childbirth, obesity, chronic coughing, aging and menopause. There are many methods available to treat this condition, ranging from kegel exercises to surgery.

It can be embarrassing to seek care for any of these conditions but rest assured that the female urogynecologists at Dr. Lona Sasser Obstetrics and Gynecology are highly trained, compassionate doctors who are ready to partner with you on your health journey.
