Whether you’re trying to get pregnant or avoid pregnancy, finding your fertile window is key. Here we share 5 easy ways how.

When it comes to getting pregnant, timing is everything. Your fertile window is the days during your cycle when pregnancy is possible: typically, the day your ovary releases an egg and the five days prior. Learning how to track your fertile window can help you make informed reproductive decisions.

At Dr. Lonna Sasser Obstetrics and Gynecology we are here to support you in your journey, whether to prepare for conception or simply to better understand your cycle. Contact us today! Call (954) 340-1050.

Here are 5 easy ways to find your fertile window:

  1. Start tracking your period. Tracking your period will help you to determine the length of your cycle. If you have a regular cycle, you may be able to pinpoint your ovulation day with some simple math. For women who experience regular cycles, ovulation typically occurs 12 to 14 days before your next period begins, so counting back 14 days from the first day of your period can help you find your ovulation day. That day and the five days prior are your fertile window.
  2. Track mucus. Another empowering way to get to know your cycle is to look for signs of fertile mucus in your body. About six days prior to ovulation, the mucus in your body begins to change. These mucus changes are one of your body’s amazing ways of preparing for conception. Look for mucus that resembles egg-white. The clear, stretchy, slippery mucus makes it easier for sperm to travel through your body to the egg and will mark the start of your fertile window.
  3. Track your body’s temperature. Your body’s temperature dips just before an egg gets released from your ovary, and rises again about 24 hours after, marking ovulation’s end. Your body’s temperature may remain raised for several days after ovulation. Since a higher temperature marks the end of your fertile window, body temperature is not a great way to time around possible conception. It is, however, a great way to track your cycle.
  4. Use an ovulation kit. At-home ovulation kits are available at most grocery stores and pharmacies. These kits measure the luteinizing hormone (LH) in your urine, which surges 24-48 hours prior to ovulation. The 2-3 days prior to and including ovulation are your most fertile days.
  5. Visit your OBGYN. We can monitor ovulation in our office in a number of ways that are not available through at-home tracking including via pelvic ultrasound and blood work to track progesterone levels. In any case, if you are trying to get pregnant, seeing your OBGYN for a preconception check is a great place to start.
