The Gynecology Ultrasound Procedure

A gynecology ultrasound is performed with a transducer — a thin plastic wand that emits high-frequency sound waves. When placed over the abdomen or inside the vagina, the sound waves move through the body, bounce off the organs and structures within, and produce an image for your doctor to examine. The procedure is usually painless, and no radiation is used.

Why Get a Gynecology Ultrasound?

There are many reasons to get a gynecology ultrasound. The picture produced can allow your doctor to measure and evaluate the pelvic organs. It can also give your doctor information about the location, size and shape of pelvic masses. According to Johns Hopkins University, a gynecology ultrasound can be used to diagnose the following conditions of the pelvis:

  • Abnormalities in the anatomic structure of the uterus
  • Fibroid tumors (benign growths), masses, cysts, and other types of tumors
  • Presence and position of an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD)
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and other types of inflammation or infection
  • Postmenopausal bleeding
  • Monitoring of ovarian follicle size for infertility evaluation
  • Aspiration of follicle fluid and eggs from ovaries for in vitro fertilization
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Monitoring fetal development during pregnancy
  • Assessing certain fetal conditions
