South Florida Women’s Health Spotlight: Ultrasounds

Ultrasounds, also called sonograms, are a type of imaging utilizing high-frequency sound waves to look at organs and other structures inside the body. Unlike X-rays, ultrasounds do not expose you to radiation. While you may be most familiar with the use of ultrasounds to see a developing fetus during pregnancy, they have other uses related to South Florida women’s health. Women’s Health Magazine writes,

“Ultrasound also is used to determine if a lump is a cyst, to look at the size and shape of abdominal and pelvic organs, to detect gallstones, and to look for blood clots in the legs. Ultrasounds can be used as a guide when a needle is being inserted into the body to take a sample of tissue for a biopsy or to take a fluid sample as is done in amniocentesis, a test to detect abnormalities in the fetus.”

Dr. Lona Sasser and Dr. Mary Squire-De Leon,  will all be happy to discuss ultrasounds and other procedures for promoting South Florida women’s health with you at your appointment.

South Florida Women’s Health Spotlight: Urogynecology

Urogynecology is the care of women with pelvic floor disorders. The pelvic floor is the weave of muscular, ligamentous, and connective tissue in the lowest part of the pelvis, which work together to provide support for the organs and structures above–including the bowel, bladder, uterus, vagina and rectum. Weakened pelvic floor muscles or tears can occur due to strain on the pelvis during childbirth, strenuous activity, menopause, chronic disease, and other factors. Possible problems arising from damage to the pelvic floor include incontinence, prolapse, emptying disorders, pain, overactive bladder, and fistulas.

A urogynecologist can recommend a variety of therapies to cure or relieve symptoms – ranging from simple lifestyle changes to surgery. At Lona Sasser Obgyn, we offer minimally invasive surgery, pain-free surgical alternatives to urinary incontinence, and more. Contact us today to find out if our South Florida women’s health services could provide relief for any symptoms of pelvic floor disorders you may be experiencing.
