What’s a Well Woman Exam, and Why Are They So Important?

Did you know that, under the Affordable Care Act, women in the U.S. are entitled to a free annual Well Woman Exam? The cost of the exam is covered-in-full as a preventive benefit. That means your exam is free even if you haven’t yet met your plan’s deductible.

This exam is considered preventive care because it’s an opportunity for your gynecologist to help you identify health problems early. So it’s important not to skip your well woman exam even if you feel fine. Keeping up with this free annual check-up can help you stay on top of your health and address problems before they start to seriously affect your quality of life. And, the exam is a great opportunity to talk to your gynecologist about questions related to family planning, pain or discomfort during sex, urinary incontinence, menstruation, and any other matter. While researching these topics on your own can be helpful, it’s great to talk to a real doctor about them, in person!

What Happens at a Well Woman Exam?

Your well woman exam will include a discussion of your overall health, routine screenings, and a physical exam. Your doctor will likely take measurements of your height and weight, check your blood pressure, perform a breast exam, and do a Pap smear and pelvic exam. You can also request to be tested for STIs at the time of your exam.

How to get the most out of your exam? Come prepared. Bring a list of medications you’re taking and their doses; surgeries or other medical events since your last exam; and any conditions or concerns you think you’ll want to discuss with your obgyn. You’ll also want to bring a list of close relatives who had health problems (i.e. cancer or heart disease).
