A pregnancy gender blood test is growing in popularity amongst expectant parents and for good reason.

Finding out your baby’s gender is an exciting part of pregnancy for many expectant parents. If you’re feeling curious about how and when you’ll find out your baby’s gender, you might have heard about a pregnancy gender blood test.

Since it hit the market in 2011, the blood test has become a popular alternative to discovering gender during the 20-week ultrasound.  Read on to learn more about the test and whether it’s right for you!

If you are in need of care during your pregnancy, including a gender blood test and help understanding your results, Dr. Lona Sasser Obstetrics and Gynecology is accepting new patients and would love to hear from you.  Book your appointment online or give us a call at (954) 340-1050.

What is a pregnancy gender blood test?

Though your baby’s genitalia begin developing around 7 weeks, they can look fairly similar until about 18-20 weeks, which is why traditionally most doctors waited until a 20-week ultrasound to determine a baby’s gender.

Since a baby’s gender also shows up in a pregnant mother’s blood, expectant parents now have the option of a pregnancy gender blood test as a non-intrusive alternative. It provides the exciting answer to your baby’s gender as early as 9 weeks into pregnancy. The test is administered as a simple blood draw and results are typically available within a week or two.

Contrary to what most people think, this test is not principally a gender test. Instead, it looks for genetic conditions, some of which are sex-based, such as Down Syndrome and other chromosomal conditions. In this way, while uncovering certain genetic conditions, a pregnancy gender blood test simultaneously uncovers your baby’s sex. Pregnancy gender blood tests are safe and reveal highly accurate results at a very early stage in a mother’s pregnancy.

Since a pregnancy gender blood test also reveals other important information about your baby’s health, it’s advised that you undergo the test and review results in the care of your OB-GYN. And, of course, make it clear to your OB-GYN whether you want gender information revealed or concealed when you get the results!
