Why Your First Gynecologist Visit Matters
Seeing a gynecologist for the first time is about more than just checking for problems. It’s a chance to establish a relationship with a provider who can support you through all stages of life—puberty, menstruation, contraception, pregnancy, menopause, and more.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that girls have their first gynecology visit between the ages of 13 and 15. But if you’re older and haven’t had your first visit yet, it’s never too late to start.
What to Expect During the Appointment
Your first visit may not include a pelvic exam, especially if you’re under 21 and not experiencing any symptoms. Instead, the focus is usually on building trust, discussing your health history, and answering any questions you have.
Here’s a breakdown of what typically happens:
1. Health History
You’ll be asked about:
- Your periods (when they started, how regular they are, any pain)
- Sexual activity and contraception (if applicable)
- Any symptoms like pelvic pain, unusual discharge, or irregular bleeding
- Your personal and family medical history
This helps your gynecologist understand your needs and provide personalized care.
2. General Physical Exam
Like a regular check-up, this may include checking your height, weight, and blood pressure.
3. Breast Exam (Optional)
Depending on your age and medical history, your doctor may perform a quick breast exam to check for any lumps or changes.
4. Pelvic Exam (If Needed)
If you are 21 or older or experiencing symptoms, your doctor may do a pelvic exam, which includes:
- External exam: A visual check of the vulva.
- Speculum exam: Using a small tool to gently open the vaginal walls and examine the cervix.
- Pap smear: If you’re 21 or older, a Pap test may be done to screen for cervical cancer.
- Bimanual exam: Your doctor will insert gloved fingers into the vagina and press on your abdomen to check your uterus and ovaries.
You can ask your doctor to explain each step as it happens, and remember—you’re always in control. If you’re uncomfortable, let your provider know.
Questions You Might Want to Ask
This visit is also your chance to get answers to questions you might not feel comfortable asking anywhere else. You can talk to your gynecologist about:
- Birth control options
- Menstrual cramps or irregular periods
- Acne or body hair concerns
- Pain or discomfort during sex
- STD testing and prevention
- Vaccines like HPV
No topic is off-limits. Your doctor is here to listen, not to judge.
Tips for Your First Visit
To make the most of your appointment, here are a few tips:
- Don’t worry about shaving: Your doctor isn’t judging your shaving or hygiene habits.
- Schedule when you’re not on your period (if possible): It’s easier to perform certain tests when you’re not menstruating.
- Bring a list of questions: Writing things down can help if you’re feeling nervous.
- Know your health history: Including the date of your last period and any medications you’re taking.
