At your appointment with us, we will discuss your lifestyle to help determine what might be the best form of birth control for you. For example, if you have a predictable schedule, a regular morning or bedtime routine, and/or are in the habit of using your smartphone to set reminders for yourself, the birth control pill could be a great option for you – because it is important to take the pill at the same time every day. If you decide to take the pill, your gynecologist will write you a prescription, and you will pick the pill up at your local pharmacy. Usually you would pick up a month’s worth of pills at a time; however, if you will be traveling, or if you need a backup pack in case of emergency, your pharmacist will likely be able to provide you with an extra pack of pills. Where to Get Birth Control: IUD and Birth Control Implant
If you have trouble sticking to routine for whatever reason – maybe your schedule is unpredictable, or maybe you have a tendency to be forgetful – you might be more comfortable with a birth control method that you don’t need to remember to take. Several forms of birth control fall under this umbrella, including IUDs and the birth control implant, which last for years at a time. If you decide to use either of these long-term forms of birth control, your gynecologist would do the insertion for you at an in-office appointment. The IUD is inserted into the patient’s cervix (the entrance to the uterus). The birth control implant is a small rod that is implanted into the patient’s arm. Both these forms of birth control are highly effective, in part because once you’ve had the procedure to insert them, you don’t need to remember to take them.
Where to Get Birth Control: Condoms
Condoms are another effective method of birth control, especially if used in combination with another method – and unlike other forms of birth control, condoms also protect you against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Condoms can be found in the Family Planning section of your pharmacy, grocery store or convenience store. If you’re sexually active, it’s a good idea to keep a few extra condoms handy for protection against both STIs and pregnancy!
